we do not belong in boxes
and bags and books or
words,
and we do not sit contently
in wordsworth and shakespeare
and blake, burns, and brownings
or in the cold stiff bones
of raleigh's of long ago;

no--

we infect,
detect, and re-select
a virus--a disease,
a germ in every verse and line;
the first signs of
foolish waitings under
bridges and scolding parents
and melodrama
and nothing to signify at all

yet--

we are the blood of nations
and the heart of men
and the love of every
rhetorist and sentimist
to come;
we dance through the ballrooms of
the age and chat with
higher minds
we shake hands with heros
and the homeless, dirty
type that gum over 'hello's

yes--

we are
we are and aren't and will be
silly verse and
clever schemes
naive philosophers and sweet oxymorons
waving hello from the shore;
forever onward and never ending
like the stars in an
ever-cliche sky.
A little inspirationf for my contest, eh? [link] (Some watchers may remember this from my journal. :meow:)

Really good. (: However, I don't get why the name is " I'm not an artist"

I'm not an artist, I'm a poet! ^^ (Or, I'd like to call myself one.)

Thanks! :XD: The reverence is as impressive as it is flattering. ;) Anyways, I think that line is so cute. Tooting my own horn there, I have to say.

Nice work. The ultra-modern is just as valid (and silly sometimes) as the old. Thank you for helping to enunciate that. :)

Thanks. :) The new and untried are often looked over (too much unbased thought on the part of critics, I suppose); but, as with artists, they'll probably all have their fame when they're dead.

You're welcome. :) Too often we don't notice people's work until they've sacrificed everything. Knowing that each new day brings new realisations keeps it interesting though.

I meant it to be a universal poem; not just for poets really, but for artists. ^^

:glomp: Ah, thanks, my friend. The two most common adjectives I'm getting here are "deep" and "layered!" XD I didn't even so it that "deep" compared to some of my other works...hey, but I've never gotten such a big response to my poetry before! XD

it makes us sounds like we are outlaws or fringe society, your first and third stanzas conflict with your second and fourth, you uplift the artist and then push the artist away to something else, its like we are the Victor Hugo of comic books or the Rembrandt of MS Paint

Well, we really are. :shrug: I mean, we create "art" with a media that is everything that art is not--it's a abused, overused, invisible substance found in your head and the insides of your mouth.

I tried to create a bit of a contrast; a bit of a different perspective, or a contradiction. (Catch the "--" spell out "no yet yes?" XD)

You did create contrast, but strikingly so. Ever since watching V for Vendetta, I would see art and writing as a higher calling if i ever were to realize that potential . "Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth."

I believe words to be the highest form of art--well, maybe. They engage all the senses: visually, physically, mentally, etc. You don't just see it...you feel it on your tongue, from your innermost imagination, etc. It's really rather an amazing form. Yet, it's one of the hardest to grasp, and lies on the outskirts of the creative scope.
